From the AlmDorf Tonnerhütte in the Zirbitzkogel Grebenzen Nature Park, you can hike leisurely from hut to hut, or get to know the beauty of nature around the Zirbitzkogel on a guided hike with certified hiking guides. Between Styria and Carinthia, the Zirbitzkogel is the highest peak in the Lavanttal and Seetal Alps. At 2,396 m above sea level, it is an excellent vantage mountain, offering hikers fantastic distant views of Styria, Carinthia and the Zirbitzkogel Grebenzen Nature Park.

As the highest peak in the Seetal Alps, the Zirbitzkogel offers a unique 360° panoramic view of the Murau holiday region and the Murtal valley. With an ascent of approx. 2.5 hours, the Grasberg is also a popular hiking tour for families in Styria. Those who prefer a more leisurely hike can take the Panorama Trail – a circular trail to above the timberline with panoramic views of the Zirbitzkogel Grebenzen Nature Park.

Rustic Alpine Huts for 2 – 8 persons

From the romantic “witch’s cottage” with a outhouse hidden in the forest to the comfortable alpine hut for 8 people, in the alpine village Tonnerhütte on the Zirbitzkogel, hut lovers get their money’s worth. All huts have a wood-burning cooker or tiled cooker as the centrepiece of the rustic parlour. Whether with a fountain in front of the door for the morning cat wash or rather comfortable with a bathtub, there is something for every hut fan.

The apartments, designed in 2020 at 1600m above sea level, are furnished in a high-quality and natural way. The communicative centre of each flat is the spacious kitchen-living room. There you will find a cooker with ceramic hob and oven, a fridge with freezer compartment, a coffee machine, a kettle and a dishwasher. All flats are equipped with shower, WC and satellite TV. Easy Tour Mühlen-Zirben Rundweg 1,6 km, ca. 0:31 h, 74 hm

The lovingly laid out family hiking trail leads through moderately ascending high forest terrain, past old tree stands and adventure stations to the urn cemetery.

Easy Tour Panorama round hike Herta Höhe (Zirbitzkogel) 3,2 km, ca. 1:10 h, 198 hm

The panoramic circular hiking trail leads from the Tonnerhütte via a cottage settlement Herterhöhe. On this beautiful vantage point is a “Nature reading island”. From there we get back below the tree line and walk through the forest back to the Tonnerhütte.

Medium Tour Tonnerhütte – Church Jakobsberg – Tonnerhütte 4,5 km, ca. 2:15 h, 500 hm

from the Tonnerhütte downhill following the access road to the 2nd bend – straight ahead towards the Bogenparcours and after about 15m left into the hollow way downhill following the path to the Jakosberg church. From there we have a beautiful view over the valley. Follow the municipal road to the crossroads Tonnerhütte Mühlen – up along the road – after about 500m right along the meadow path to Schober and via Übelbachweg along the route from the glacier to the wine back to Tonnerhütte.

From the Tonnerhütte, the hike leads to the summit of the Zirbitzkogel – one of the most beautiful view mountains in Styria. This hiking trail is a permanent IVV hiking trail.

Difficult Tour From the Tonnerhütte over the Zirbitzkogel to St. Martin am Silberberg 18,7 km, ca. 7 h, 857 hm

From the Tonnerhütte we go to the summit of the Zirbitzkogel, to the Lavantseehöhe and past the Fuchskogel over the Zanitzenhöhe to the St. Martiner Hütte. From there it is not far to Carinthia and St. Martin am Silberberg.
